These
two mountain ranges lie in S.E. Switzerland to the north of
Milan on the border with Italy. The most convenient road access
from the north is via the German autobahn system. St Moritz
is also close by.
Although close together these mountain provide strongly contrasting
styles of alpinism. Piz Bernina is the most easterly 4,000
metre peak in the Alps and is surrounded by high snowy summits
and large glaciers. In contrast the Bregaglia is well known
for its soaring grey granite walls that offer easily accessible
climbs of up to three thousand feet in length. Both areas
are well suited for all levels of mountain abilities and offer
much quieter mountain days than in the western Alps.
The six day courses will aim to ascend Piz Bernina after
a spell of acclimatisation and alpine skills training. The
programme could also include an ascent of Piz Badile in the
Bregaglia. Final decisions on which climbs are attempted will
rest with the course members.
